Zwitscher-Maschine. Journal of Klee Studies is the international, bilingual scholarly journal dedicated to the study of the life and work of Paul Klee. As an open-access journal, the journal provides a freely accessible forum for art historical, literary, philosophical, and artistic contributions, as well as addenda to the Catalogue raisonné.
Zwitscher-Maschine invites researchers to actively contribute to the ongoing study of Klee through scholarly articles, essays, and archival research. Proposals and manuscripts may be submitted to the editorial team in accordance with the Author Guidelines and the Style Sheet.
Zwitscher-Maschine is published online twice a year. The journal is published and edited by the Zentrum Paul Klee, and its review process is supported by an international academic advisory board.
The journal was founded in 2015 by Osamu Okuda at the Zentrum Paul Klee in Bern together with the Zurich publisher Walther Fuchs. The current editorial board are Fabienne Eggelhöfer, Toni Hildebrandt, Marie Kakinuma, and Nina Zimmer. Editors-in-chief are Toni Hildebrandt, Marie Kakinuma, and Osamu Okuda.
For the journal’s digital relaunch in 2026, Dorothee Dähler and Kaj Lehmann (Zurich) developed the design for the new website. All issues of Zwitscher-Maschine are also archived by arthistoricum at Universität Heidelberg.

Zwitscher-Maschine. Journal of Klee Studies ist die internationale, zweisprachige Fachzeitschrift zur Erforschung von Leben und Werk Paul Klees. Als Open-Access-Journal bietet sie ein frei zugängliches Forum für kunsthistorische, literarische, philosophische und künstlerische Beiträge sowie Addenda zum Catalogue raisonné.
Als wissenschaftliche Zeitschrift des Zentrum Paul Klee lädt die Zwitscher-Maschine Forschende dazu ein, die Auseinandersetzung mit Klee in Aufsätzen, Essays und Archivstudien aktiv mitzugestalten. Vorschläge und Manuskripte können entsprechend der Richtlinien für Autor:innen und des Stylesheets bei der Redaktion eingereicht werden.
Die Zwitscher-Maschine erscheint halbjährlich online. Herausgeberschaft und Redaktion werden vom Zentrum Paul Klee verantwortet. Ein internationaler wissenschaftlicher Beirat begleitet das Auswahlverfahren.
